A 40-year-old labourer of Winkle Road, New Amsterdam, Berbice was this morning remanded to prison for the murder of a Stanleytown, New Amsterdam man.
Dexroy Ogleton appeared at the New Amsterdam Magistrate Court and was charged with murder, contrary to common law. The charge read that Ogleton, on 16, 2022 at Main and Kent Street, New Amsterdam, murdered Jermaine Elias called “Deportee.”
He appeared before Magistrate Renita Singh and was not required to plead. The matter was adjourned until August 10, 2022 for statements.
Elias, 43 Stanleytown, New Amsterdam sustained a fatal slash to the neck with a grass knife. Ogelton, who delivered the fatal injury, then rode to the Central Police Station in New Amsterdam and reported what had occurred; he was subsequently placed under arrest.
Kevin Chesney, an eyewitness, had told News Room that he was at the Superbet on Main and Kent Street, New Amsterdam at the same time Elias was there.
He disclosed that Elias stepped out on the public road and shortly after the accused, who was passing on his bicycle, stopped, and an argument between the victim and him ensued.
Chesney said the argument turned physical and a third person tried to separate the two but “the man that got kill like he didn’t want it done.”
He said Elias picked up a mop stick and dealt the accused several lashes about his body and in retaliation, the accused pulled out a “grass knife” from the bag he had on him and began to “fire chops.”
One of those chops slashed the throat of Elias, causing him to collapse.
Elias was pronounced dead at the New Amsterdam Hospital shortly after.
