Pandit charged, remanded for watchman’s murder

A Pandit who worked as a Pump Operator at the Rose Hall Sugar Estate and resides at New Area Canefield, East Canje, Berbice was Friday morning remanded to prison for the murder of his co-worker.

Tharun Balgobin, 32, appeared at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Renita Singh and was charged with the capital offence of murder committed on 59-year-old Angraj Kumar Indrapaul called ‘Charles’ also of New Area, Canefield, East Canje.

He was not required to enter a plea and was remanded to prison until September 07, 2022; the matter was transferred to the Reliance Magistrate’s Court.

Balgobin was represented by attorney Mursaline Bacchus.

The pump operator who is also a well-known Pandit was arrested following the result of the post-mortem examination conducted on the deceased. The post-mortem revealed that Indrapaul died from strangulation.

Balgobin confessed to police that he had a misunderstanding with Indrapaul over incomplete work at the pump station. He said he strangled the victim with his hands and threw him into the canal.
