Residents are now counting their losses following a freak storm, which damaged a house, trees, cash crops and disrupted electricity at De Hoop, Mahaica, East Coast Demerara.
A resident in the area told the News Room that they experienced high winds and thunder just after noon on Thursday.
“The damages happened at one particular house and (to) crops,” the resident said.
The house is owned by a businessman, who estimated the damages to be about $2 million.
Additionally, a tamarind tree in the area, which residents estimate to be over 80 years old, also fell to the ground, and a light pole was almost uprooted just over the Mahaica Bridge.
