Driver in Blankenburg fatal accident pleads not guilty to causing man’s death

Vickey Balgobin, the driver involved in the fatal hit-and-run accident along the Blankenburg Public Road, West Coast Demerara, which left 42-year-old Azaad Khan dead, has been charged and remanded to prison.

Based on information provided by Police Headquarters, he was charged for the following offences: Failing to render assistance to an injured person, failing to stop after an accident and causing death by dangerous driving.

Balgobin, however, pleaded not guilty to the Causing Death charge and was remanded to prison.

Meanwhile, he pleaded guilty to the other charges and was fined $40,000 or 12 weeks imprisonment each.

The matter was adjourned to October 26, 2022.

According to earlier reports, Balgobin admitted that he was the vehicle’s driver and explained that he fled the scene because he panicked.

Based on police reports, the car was proceeding west at a fast rate along the Blankenburg Public Road and collided with Khan who was crossing the road at the time.

As a result of the collision, he suffered a severed left leg and landed in a yard four houses away.

Community Police picked up the motionless body of the pedestrian which was taken to the West Demerara Regional Hospital where he was seen, examined and pronounced dead by the Dr. A. Dhaniram.
