A 55-year-old retired policeman was on Friday released on $200,000 bail for allegedly abducting a businessman at a popular Kitty, Georgetown bar.

Kenneth Bahadur of Melanie, East Coast Demerara, appeared before City Magistrate Leron Daly on the indictable charge.

Particulars of the charge alleged that on September 12, 2022, at Station Street, Kitty, Bahadur abducted Jagdesh Mangal with the intent to secretly confine him.

Bahadur was represented by attorney-at-law Patrice Henry, who made an application for bail.

Police Prosecutor Christopher Morris told the court that on the day in question, Mangal was at a popular bar at Station Street, Kitty when he was approached by Bahadur and two other male suspects.

According to Morris, Mangal was forced into the back seat of a vehicle and it quickly sped off. He was allegedly taken to a house in Georgetown, where he was held at gun-point and robbed.

The victim was allegedly robbed of a gold and diamond band valued at $1.5 million, one black diamond with a gold ring valued $1.2 million and one gold chain valued $900,000.

He was allegedly forced to sign the note stating that he owed one of the suspects. He was then taken to a hotel on Church Street, where he was ordered out of the vehicle.

The prosecutor objected to the defendant being released on bail since the other suspects are still on the run and he might tamper with witnesses.

However, Magistrate Daly released Bahadur on $200,000 bail and adjourned the matter until October 7.
