In a bid to foster youth involvement in community development and to equip young people with the skills for employment, the government will be establishing an information and communication technology (ICT) hub and renovating the community ground in Tucville, Georgetown.

This was disclosed by President Dr. Irfaan Ali during a walkabout in the community on Tuesday where he met with residents and listened to their concerns.

The Head of State was told that many youths within the community are enrolled in the Guyana Online Academy of Learning (GOAL) programme, however, they face challenges in accessing their classes due to unstable internet, among other issues.

In this regard, President Ali noted that an ICT facility with internet connectivity and computers will be established in the community so students can access their classes.

Additionally, he mentioned that as part of the numerous infrastructural works the government is undertaking within the area, the community ground will also be renovated to encourage sports activities.

This forms part of the President’s plans to engage athletes countrywide to work with youths within their communities to develop positive attitudes.

President Ali noted that one of the major complaints he received recently is the lack of skilled personnel to undertake various jobs, especially technical jobs, however, his government is using a community approach to tackle the issue.

“We’re taking young people from all these communities across the country put them into accelerated technical training programmes and then integrate them into the workforce,” he said.

Residents raised other concerns involving drainage and irrigation, and housing matters to which President Ali promised a follow-up visit by the Ministers of Agriculture, Housing and Water, and Infrastructure to address those specific concerns.
