15 years imprisonment for elderly man convicted of sodomising 15-Y-O boy

Sixty-one-year-old Laldeo Jagdeo called ‘Basha’ was on Wednesday sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for repeatedly sodomising a 15-year-old boy in 2019.

Jagdeo of Devonshire Castle, Essequibo Coast was sentenced by Justice Jo-Ann Barlow at the Suddie High Court.

Last month, a 12-member jury found Jagdeo guilty of three counts of rape of a child under the age of 16.

Particulars of the three-indictment read that Jagdeo between September-October 2019, engaged in sexual penetration with the 15-year-old boy.

On Wednesday, while delivering her sentencing remarks, Justice Barlow said that she considered the psychological trauma the incident has caused the victim.

She also considered that Jagdeo breached the victim’s trust since the youth worked with him on weekends and holidays to earn an extra income for his family.

Jagdeo, during his address to the court, said, “ma’am my erection gone since meh turn 55 years,” as he continued to deny that he could have committed the act.

Justice Barlow sentenced Jagdeo to serve 13 years on the first count, 13 years on the second count and 15 years on the third count.

However, the sentences will run concurrently and Jagdeo will only serve 15 years in prison.

Justice Barlow also ordered that he undergoes counselling for sex offenders while in prison.
