Mahendra Paltoo, called “Ajay”, 35, of Bloomfield, Corentyne, Berbice was remanded to prison on Thursday for the fatal chopping of his reputed wife Oma Devi Virasamy on Sunday last.

Paltoo, who showed no remorse during the court proceedings, muttered “home sweet home” before being whisked away by the police at the Whim Magistrate’s Court. Palto was released from prison in March this year during which he got into a relationship with Virasamy.

The labourer was remanded to prison for the capitol offense of murder on Thursday.

He was not required to plead to the indictable charge and was remanded to prison until December 12, 2022 for disclosure.

Paltoo confessed to chopping Virasamy during an argument on Sunday at their Bloomfield home. Paltoo had told relatives and police initially that she fell on the cutlass and cut herself.

He lied to investigators that Virasamy was making up the bed when she fell on the cutlass which was between the two mattresses. He said he helped dress the wound and they went to bed but when he woke up at approximately 04:40 hrs on Monday, he found Virasamy lifeless on the bed.

However, he later changed his story and admitted that he chopped Virasamy during an argument Sunday night; she died hours later.

An autopsy revealed that the woman died from a cut artery of the foot compounded by shock and hemorrhage.
