Venezuelan national remanded for miner’s murder

Carlos DaSilva, called Carlos Rodrigues, a 27-year-old Venezuelan national of Tuschen New Scheme, East Bank Essequibo, was charged and remanded to prison on Friday for the murder of Ravindra Alfred, a miner.

The accused appeared at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Crystal Lambert where the charge was read to him.

He was not required to plea to the indictable charge and was remanded to prison until December 22, 2022 for filing of statements.

Carlos was arrested on Tuesday last. The foreign national is accused of chopping Alfred multiple times sometime between 09:00hrs on Sunday and 09:00hrs on Monday at Sand Hill Backdam, Region Seven. Alfred was reportedly involved in an intimate relationship with the suspect’s fiancée.

An autopsy conducted by government pathologist Doctor Nehaul Singh revealed that Alfred died as a result of multiple chop wounds.

Police had reported that Alfred and the suspect worked together at Sand Hill Backdam.
