Suriname took day one honours in Volleyball action by winning both the male and female matches against Guyana at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
The Guyanese girls went down 11-25, 19-25, 11-25 to a well-oiled Suriname team, who scored heavily on their serves and won numerous rallies at the net.
Chanting in their native Dutch language, the Surinamese surged ahead quickly in the sets often leading Guyana by 10 points. Despite late rallies by the locals, the visitors held their own to walk away victorious.
As the matches progressed, Guyana grew in confidence and found more rhythm and it could put them in good stead for the two remaining matches.
Over in the male division, the Guyanese showed greater resistance, but still did not get the winning result, prevailing in just one set 25-21.
The other sets went 25-20, 25-23, 25-18 in favour of Suriname.
Volleyball action continues on Saturday from 18:00h.
