Relative assisting Police with investigation into murder of 85 year old woman

A relative of Sumintra Shaw, who was found dead in her home on Monday, is currently in Police custody assisting the police with investigations.

Police Commander for Region Five (Mahaica – Berbice), Senior Superintendent Kurleigh Simon, on Tuesday confirmed that the Police are still investigating the incident.

“Someone is in custody assisting with the investigation,” the Commander said.

Shaw called “Aunty Betty”, 85, of Bushlot, West Coast Berbice was found dead in her home on Monday. Shaw was found sometime around 05:00 hrs with multiple stab wounds; the discovery was made by a relative who takes care of the woman.

Police in West Coast Berbice launched an investigation into the alleged murder of the woman immediately after being summoned. The News Room understands that the Police are investigating the case as a robbery/murder.

Shaw had a handbag where she usually kept her money, identification card, pension book, and other articles; the handbag was missing from her bedroom.

Meanwhile, another relative of the deceased woman, said the relative has been in police custody since Monday.

“They have her in lock up. This morning I ask if I could speak to her; they said I could see her face but don’t talk,” the relative said.

The man explained that Shaw had a caretaker who stayed with her because she was unwell. The caretaker was home with Shaw at the time of the incident.

As the Police continue their investigation, they are canvassing the area for CCTV footage.
