Despite Guyana winning five of the nine disciplines contested, Suriname emerged overall champions of the Inter-Guiana Games, which concluded on Sunday evening with a closing ceremony at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
After the scores were tabulated, Suriname emerged with 110 points, narrowly edging hosts Guyana by two points. French Guiana, who contested just two disciplines, occupied third with 26 points.
Guyana won Cycling (Male), Football (Female), Swimming (Male and Female), Track and Field (Male and Female) and Table Tennis (Male and Female), while Suriname took top honours in Badminton (Male and Female), Tennis (Male and Female), Basketball (Male and Female) and Volleyball (Male and Female).
Crucially, French Guiana took second spot to Suriname in both Male and Female Basketball, leaving Guyana in the cellar position, a scenario that proved decisive in the end.
The Inter-Guiana Games was being held for the first time since 2017, and attracted over 400 athletes and officials, the largest in its history.
