Man called ‘Heads’ allegedly murdered Berbice couple
Harrichan Persaud called ‘Heads’, a 22-year-old resident of Yakusari, Black Bush Polder, Berbice, is the alleged murderer of the elderly couple Sarasuati Devi Budraj called ‘Sita” and Subnauth Budraj called “Bull Boy”.
Police Headquarters said after the bodies of the Budrajs were discovered on Tuesday, officers started investigating the crime.
Acting on information received, ranks carried out a search between 11:30hrs and 12:30hrs at the home of a 60-year-old cash crop farmer of Yakusari South for arms, ammunition, drugs and a wanted person.
During that search, an officer found a quantity of cash and jewellery in a room. Those items belonged to the Budrajs.
Emmanuel Whittington, whose room the items were found in, reportedly told police that he and Persaud robbed Subnauth and his wife. He later alleged that Persaud murdered the couple.
Officers later found Persaud and told him of the allegation, which he denied. Police arrested both suspects as investigations continue.
Meanwhile, the News Room previously reported that one of the suspects told Police that the intention was to commit robbery but the victims recognised them; to derail Police investigations they killed the couple and set the place on fire by opening a gas bottle in the kitchen and lighting papers on fire.
The fumes emanating from the burning paper caused the gas bottle to explode, setting the place ablaze with the already dead Budraj couple lying on the floor.
Neighbours said they heard a loud explosion on Tuesday morning and subsequently saw fire coming from the bottom flat of the two storey concrete house and business place of the couple. The fire service was contacted and arrived sometime after.
The gate to enter the yard had to be removed for entry into the bottom flat where the couple dwelled. Residents reportedly entered and “upon pushing the door, one of the victim’s was lying face down and they didn’t enter further.” The area was subsequently secured when Police arrived.
When Police entered the property, they saw the body of a male lying face-down with injuries and the woman was also found also lying face-down with “an object in the left side of her neck” in the dining area.
