The 19-year-old driver who struck down two persons on the Hopetown Public Road, West Coast Berbice (WCB) on Sunday night has claimed that he was beaten, robbed of his iPhone Pro Max and a gold chain.

The driver has been identified as Nicholas Arjune, a businessman of Bath Settlement, WCB. He reportedly struck down 22-year-old Kevin Wilson, a private of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) and a 14-year-old student of the Fort Wellington secondary school.

They were both riding an electric scooter at the time of the accident. Arjune, who is now in custody, told the Police ranks that the two men rode in the path of his car PNN 1801.

The injured men were escorted to Fort Wellington hospital where the 14-year-old was treated for minor injuries and discharged. Wilson, however, was referred to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital where he is being treated for injuries to his head and other parts of the body.

His condition is regarded as stable.

The accident resulted in brief unrest at Hopetown after residents on Sunday night torched the car at the accident scene while efforts were being made by the Police to tow it away.

Police Headquarters reported in a press release that, in the full view of the Deputy Commander and other ranks, residents threw a liquid substance on the driver’s Mazda RX8 as they prevented the authorities from removing the car from the scene.

They also threw missiles at the tow truck, damaging the front windshield, the right side glass and other parts of vehicle. The driver for the tow truck then drove away and residents proceeded to set the car on fire.

Meanwhile, according to Police Headquarters, Arjune showed up at the police station and as he was about to visit the hospital, his father, Hansraj Arjune, arrived and began to verbally abuse the police ranks.

It is alleged by the Police that the younger Arjune left with his father but both men were later arrested – the father for disorderly behaviour.

The Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner, Kurleigh Simon, has indicated that while the situation is back to normal at Hopetown, a thorough investigation has been launched into all circumstances surrounding the incident.

This news medium has revealed some important information such the names of the persons involved in the accident .
It has also mentioned many other significant activities surrounding the incident which is heartening ,however, in my view the most important factor is the identification of those persons who destroyed private and public property and contributed to disruption of human lives.
These individuals must be called out and dealt with by the law.
