The young man who struck two persons along the Hopetown, West Coast Berbice public road on Sunday last has been placed on $100,000 station bail.

Nicholas Arjune, the 19-year-old who was driving his Mazda RX8, was arrested following the accident that rendered two persons injured.

Arjune, a businessman of Bath Settlement, reportedly struck down 22-year-old Kevin Wilson, a private of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) and a 14-year-old student of the Fort Wellington secondary school on February 5.

Arjune’s father, who reportedly verbally abused the Police Officers, was arrested and submitted released on $25,000 station bail.

The News Room understands that a file on the accident is being compiled and will be sent for legal advice.

Following the accident Sunday night, chaos erupted on the public road when residents converged. They pulled the driver from his car and later torched the vehicle, blocking the public road and preventing the free flow of traffic.

The driver was also beaten and reportedly robbed of his iPhone Pro Max and gold chain at the scene while his car went up in flames.

Arjune told the Police that the two men who were on an electric scooter rode into the path of his car (PNN 1801).

The torched car at the accident scene

The injured men were escorted to Fort Wellington hospital, where the 14-year-old was treated for minor injuries and discharged. Wilson, however, was referred to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital.

Police Headquarters reported in a press release that, in the full view of the Deputy Commander and other ranks, residents threw a liquid substance on the driver’s Mazda RX8 as they prevented the authorities from removing the car from the scene.

They also threw missiles at the tow truck, damaging the front windshield, the right side glass and other parts of the vehicle. The driver for the tow truck then drove away, and residents proceeded to set the car on fire.

Regional Commander Kurleigh Simon had said that a thorough investigation would be done and those responsible for the burning and damaging of the vehicles would also be held responsible.
