Brazilians arrested following discovery of helicopter, illegal mining sites in Region Nine

Police ranks have arrested two Brazilian men following the discovery of a helicopter and two illegal mining camps at New River Triangle, South Rupununi, Region Nine.

The News Room was reliably informed that the discovery of the illegal mining camps was made at about 16:00 hrs on Sunday and among the two suspects arrested is a licensed Brazilian pilot.

According to information received, a joint services team was conducting surveillance of the area in South Rupununi when they spotted the illegal mining camps.

Upon their arrival at the camps, several males suspected to be Brazilians were spotted but they managed to escape.

The camps were searched and a number of items including a 12-gauge shotgun with several cartridges, six cellular phones and several documents were found, the News Room was informed.

Further searches were conducted and a 29-year-old Brazilian miner was arrested.

At about 13:30 hrs the following day, one grey Robinson 44 Helicopter landed at the same site.

Reports are that at the time, the Brazilian captain was the lone occupant. Nothing illegal was found in the helicopter.

The helicopter was taken to the Aishalton Airstrip and investigations are ongoing.
