A 31-year-old woman, who had spent the last few months on remand for the murder of her reputed husband, was on Tuesday released on $500,000 bail after the indictment was reduced to manslaughter.
Last October, Aquiella Abrams of Onion Field, La Bonne Intention (LBI), East Coast of Demerara (ECD) made her first appearance before Magistrate Fabayo Azore at the Cove and John Magistrate’s Court.
She was not required to plead to the capital offence and was remanded to prison.
Particulars of the charge alleged that Abrams on October 10, 2022, at Sideline Dam, Golden Grove, ECD, murdered Michael Wilson.
On Tuesday, the case was scheduled for report and disclosure.
During the hearing, the court was informed that based on the advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions n (DPP), Shalimar Ali Hack, the murder indictment will be withdrawn and substituted with manslaughter.
The fresh charge was read to Abrams and she was not required to plead.
Her attorney, Tuanna Hardy made an application for bail, which was granted in the sum of $500,000 by Magistrate Azore.
The matter is adjourned until March 8, 2023.
The News Room had reported that the couple was together for the past two years. Abrams had told investigators that she faced physical and verbal abuse from Wilson.
Police said the couple started arguing on October 9, after the woman told Wilson she was ending the relationship and would be returning to her parents’ house.
The next morning, while packing her belongings, the couple got into a violent argument during which Wilson armed himself with a knife and stabbed the woman to her left forearm.
Police said the woman then managed to disarm Wilson and stabbed him twice to his abdomen.
Wilson was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was admitted to the Emergency Unit in an unconscious state and subsequently died while receiving treatment.
