Hubbard, Adams bowl Essequibo to huge win after batting heroics from Savory, Sampson

Spinners Malcolm Hubbard and Antony Adams shared eight wickets, Kemol Savory made a splendid, unbeaten century and Quentin Sampson went into T20 mode to lift Essequibo to a commanding 271-run victory over the Select XI in round one of the Guyana Cricket Board’s Senior Inter-County Four-Day Championship on Friday at the National Stadium, Providence.
Set a massive target of 393, the Select XI were dismissed for 121 during the final session of the third day, with off-spinner Hubbard and left-arm spinner Adams taking 4-29 and 4-44 respectively.
National Youth player Alvin Mohabir with 33 and skipper Rajendra Chandrika with 26 were the only batsmen to score beyond 20 as the Select XI batsmen struggled for the second time in the game.
It was the opposite for Essequibo in their second innings, declaring on 297-8 from 56 overs after earning a first innings lead of 130.
The left-handed Savory led the way with an accomplished unbeaten 100 from 138 balls (16x4s), while Sampson lit up the venue with a shot-filled 71 off 38 balls, an innings that included nine fours and five sixes.
Hubbard was named Man-of-the-Match for scores of 51* and 16 and match-figures of 7-54.
The other round one game was won by Berbice, who defeated Demerara by six wickets.
Round two action will start on March 9, with games at the GCC ground, Bourda, and at Enmore, East Coast Demerara.
