Bar brawl: Fisherman remanded to prison for attempted murder

A 21-year-olf fisherman of Crabwood Creek, Upper Corentyne, Berbice, was on Thursday remanded to prison for the attempted murder of Avinash Sumintra, a labourer of No. 79 Corriverton, Berbice.

Mohamed Fazar Ally called ‘Rana’ appeared at the Springlands Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Renita Singh where the charge was read to him. He was not required to plea to the indictable charge and was remanded until May 4, 2023.

Ally is accused of stabbing Sumintra multiple times on April 9 in the vicinity of the Caliente Bar and Restaurant at No. 78 public road.

Ally’s accomplice, who was also injured in the fracas, has been identified as Nazim Amroler, 17, of No.78 Village; he is a patient at the Skeldon Hospital.

The News Room reported that the trio was at the bar when an argument ensued and then quickly turned physical. Ally and Amroler ventured out of the bar, both reportedly armed with knives, and waited for Sumintra to exit.

It is alleged that they confronted him and stabbed him several times in the abdomen, back and head. Reports indicate that one of the knives was left stuck to the man’s abdomen.

Sumintra is in the Intensive Care Unit of the New Amsterdam Hospital.
