Couple freed of drug trafficking charge

A Goedverwagting, East Coast Demerara (ECD) husband and wife were freed some two years after they were charged with trafficking a quantity of marijuana.

Shelroy Clarke and Patricia Grant were arrested by the police on May 02, 2021.

They subsequently appeared at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Alisha George and pleaded not guilty to the charge of possession of 867.8 grams of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking.

They were placed on $350,000 bail each.

The couple were represented by attorney Bernard Da Silva throughout their trial.

The News Room understands that Grant was freed on April 25 after the Magistrate upheld a no case submission.

While, Clarke was acquitted on Tuesday after leading his defense.

Among his submission, the News Room understands, is that Clarke pointed out that the prosecution failed to prove beyond reasonable doubt that he committed the offence.
