A 24-year-old fisherman was on Monday sentenced to 48 months imprisonment for the possession of an illegal firearm which he bought for his “protection.”
Shamar Plass, of Red Road, Sophia, Georgetown appeared before Magistrate Russell Liverpool Sparendaam Magistrate and admitted to having a .38 revolver in his possession on May 26, 2023.
Police Prosecutor Sergeant Visram Ramjattan told the court that on the day in question, ranks acting on information received, went to ‘C’ Field Sophia and saw Plass standing on a corner operating in a “suspicious manner”.
The ranks approached him and conducted a search on his person, and in the waist of his right-side pants, they found the revolver without ammunition.
When told of the offence committed and cautioned, Plass told the officers, “Is for my protection, boss”.
Magistrate sentenced Plass to 48 months imprisonment together with a fine of $50,000.
