President Dr. Irfaan Ali on Friday said the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) government will examine the use of trains to transport people as part of efforts to alleviate traffic woes.
The Head of State made this announcement as he addressed an event commemorating the Enmore Martyrs at Enmore, East Coast Demerara (ECD).
There, he explained that the ECD corridor is poised for “drastic” transformation with the construction of the new four-lane highway. Dr. Ali also pointed out that Enmore and other East Coast communities will become industrial and commercial hubs.
These efforts are already underway but the President said the PPP/C is already thinking about the long-term development of the country.
“In the next term of office for the People’s Progressive Party, we will look at the viability of having a train along the East Coast and East Bank corridor where the bulk of the population already lives,” Dr. Ali said.
There have been some calls for the government to examine the feasibility of a train given the traffic congestion woes experienced on the East Coast and East Bank of Demerara. Before now, the President hinted at his government’s willingness to explore the use of trains.
