The Guyana Police Force has launched an investigation into the accident that claimed the life of 26-year-old motorcyclist Eone McGarrell of Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara.
The accident occurred at about 20:40 hrs Saturday along the Unity, East Coast Demerara public road.
Andre Pilgrim, the driver of motor car PTT 875, told Police he was proceeding east along the northern side of Unity public road and McGarrell was proceeding in the opposite direction with no front headlight on. Both men were speeding, Police said.
Police said McGarrell was in the process of overtaking a vehicle when he collided with the front right side of Pilgrim’s car, as a result, the car crashed into a utility pole.
As a result of the collision, McGarrell fell onto the road surface and received injuries to his left leg and other parts of his body; Pilgrim received injuries to his right hand and other parts of his body.
McGarrell’s mother, Dehola Williams, told the News Room on Sunday that eyewitnesses told her that it was not her son who was overtaking, but rather it was Pilgrim. The woman also visited the scene and claimed that there were beer bottles in the car.
McGarrell was taken to the Mahaicony Cottage Hospital, where he was seen and examined by a doctor on duty who said he was suffering from internal injuries. One of the man’s leg was torn off and found at the site later in the day, his family said. He died whilst receiving medical attention.
The driver, Pilgrim, is currently at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, suffering from a fractured right hand and injuries about his body. His condition is deemed stable.
