Police Commander 4(B) Superintendent Mahendra Singh and his driver Police Constable Ellery Mason were injured after a speeding truck collided with their vehicle Wednesday morning, Police headquarters has said.
Police Headquarters reported that the accident occurred at about 06:15 hrs at the Friendship Public Road, East Bank Demerara (EBD).
The officers were travelling in a pickup (#PAC 5254) while 29-year-old Romel Benjamin, of Lovely Lass village, West Coast of Berbice, drove the truck (#GAE 38).
The truck was reportedly speeding north along the western side of Friendship Public Road while the Police vehicle, as part of a convoy on Presidential assignment, was proceeding in the opposite direction without flashlights and siren.
Police headquarters claimed that the truck started overtaking a line of traffic on the eastern side of the road and ended up into the path of the Police pickup. Then, the right side front of the truck collided with the right side front of the Police pickup vehicle.
Both vehicles received extensive damage.
Commander Singh and his driver received injuries, and they were both picked up by public-spirited citizens and taken to the Diamond Diagnostic Center.
The driver was seen and examined by a doctor on duty and was referred to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), where he was further seen and examined by a doctor on duty and admitted a patient suffering from a broken right leg and left wrist.
Commander Singh was also taken to the GPHC, where he was examined by a doctor on duty, treated and admitted a patient suffering from multiple abrasions about the body.
Meanwhile, a breathalyser test was conducted on the truck driver but no trace of alcohol was found in his system. He was served with a Notice of Intended Prosecution, and he is presently in custody assisting with the investigation.
