Hassini Mack, a 13-year-old boy of the Wisroc New Housing Scheme in Region 10 (Upper Demerara- Berbice), reportedly drowned at the Coomacka Mines beach at about 16:30 hrs Tuesday.
Police Headquarters reported that the boy drowned during an outing with several other persons. The body of the 13-year-old has not yet been recovered.
At around 14:00 hrs Tuesday, Mack left his home in the company of a 29-year-old Canadian man and his 25-year-old wife and four young persons to go swimming at the beach.
There, Mack and the four children and the man went into the water where they were reportedly playing a few games.
At about 16:30 hrs, however, Mack and one of the other young person, a 14 year-old from Wismar, Linden went to wash off by the river side. But as they began to walk towards the center of the river, the water started to flow at a fast rate which caused Hassini to sink.
The teens reportedly shouted for assistance and the 29-year-old man ran to their assistance and managed to rescue the 14-year-old. He then attempted to rescue Mack but by that time, the 13-year-old sank and disappeared.
The man and several others who were alerted to the incident made further checks for Hassini but their efforts were futile.
Further investigations into the incident are ongoing.
