Police suspect ‘gangs’ involved in assault, robbery of students

As investigations into the assault and robbery of two students on Tuesday night continue, Police are now probing whether the incident was gang-related.

The two students, aged 15 and 16, were attacked by five young men at about 19:45 hrs Tuesday night at the Diamond Access Road, East Bank Demerara (EBD).

The 16-year-old was robbed of a Samsung S21 valued at $85,000 and the 15-year-old was robbed of an iPhone 7 valued at $68,000 along with a backpack and $200 cash.

Police Headquarters said one of the juvenile suspects involved in the incident claimed that the incident was not a robbery but a gang-related activity. That suspect was reportedly interviewed by Police Officers in the presence of his father.

That suspect told the Police that the 15-year-old victim is a member of the “TMF gang” allegedly of the Dolphin Secondary School.

Police also reported the 16-year-old victim claimed that his 15-year-old attacker is a member of the “ARK family gang” allegedly at the Carmel Secondary School.

According to investigations so far, the victims and suspects attend those two schools and go to after school lessons near First Bridge, Golden Grove, EBD.

One of the victims and the 15-year-old suspect had a “heated argument” a day prior to the incident, Police said.

The Guyana Police Force is trying to locate the other juveniles as investigations continue.
