Ashmin Mahadeo of Williamsburg, Corentyne, Berbice remains in critical condition at the Georgetown Public Hospital, one week after she was shot in front of her home.
She is hospitalised with the possibility of being paralyzed even if she survives and her fiancé, the prime suspect int he shooting, is out on bail.
A police file sent for advice put to the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) has since been returned.
While Regional Commander Shivpersaud Bacchus promised an update later Friday, sources revealed that the file was returned on Thursday to the police with a request for investigators to conduct a further probe. Upon completion of such, the file is expected to be returned to the DPP for further legal advice.
Meanwhile, the News Room was also informed by relatives that the cellphones belonging to Mahadeo and her engineer fiancé were discovered wrapped in a plastic bag in a haversack belonging to the fiancé. The same haversack he showed up with at Mahadeo’s house on Sunday shortly before she was shot. That haversack was found on Tuesday in the company vehicle that the fiancé drove. A handgun was also found in the ceiling of Ashmin’s room prior.
Initially, the brother of Ashmin, Naresh Mahadeo told reporters that when he inquired from the fiancé about his sister’s phone at the hospital, the fiancé said he did not know where hers or his was. This raised questions in the minds of Ashmin’s relatives.
Police Headquarters in an update recently stated that a handgun, magazine and three live rounds were found at the home of Ashmin.
The gun was retrieved from the ceiling of Ashmin’s room. Ashmin was shot on Sunday morning shortly after a visit from her fiancé. She reportedly called him over to take her for a nail appointment and later that day a celebration for their wedding was expected to be held along with a photoshoot.
Naresh Mahadeo, Ashmin’s brother, said they were awakened by the gunshot at about 07:30hrs on Sunday. He is visiting with his family from overseas for his sister’s nuptial celebration.
He said when he initially heard the explosion, he heard Ashmin’s fiancé in the house shouting that somebody shot her but when the rest of the family ran out the fiancé remained in the house.
The sister-in-law of Ashmin who is a nurse overseas but is in Guyana, performed CPR on her and they rushed her to the Port Mourant Hospital after the fiancé came out of the house.
When they returned to the house, relatives said that the fiancé went straight into the washroom area. Police arrested the fiancé shortly after showing up at the house to probe the shooting. He was, however, released on $300,000 bail on Wednesday while the file was sent for advice.
Ashmin’s lower body was found on the bridge. Her brother stated that it seemed she was heading back to the yard and was shot from behind on the bridge at close range. The fiancé told police and relatives that it seemed like someone passed on the street and shot her, however, surveillance footage from neighbours reportedly showed no-one passing on the street at the time of the shooting. The bridge and gate were not in view of the camera.
