The Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS) on Wednesday launched its 901 Quality Management System for micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) at the Guyana Marriott Hotel.

The certification programme, which is similar to the internationally acclaimed ISO 9001:2015 standard certification, is a comprehensive certification programme that allows MSMEs to undergo quality training to meet international management requirements.

This certification developed by the GNBS acts as a stepping stone for businesses to get international accreditation.

Al Fraser, the acting Executive Director for the GNBS said the bureau has seen a significant increase in participation for its National Quality Awards over the years. And he said this implies businesses want to conform to standard requirements.

“The GNBS believes that this surge in participation is a testament that businesses in Guyana are increasingly understanding the importance of quality and striving to be leaders in the application of quality management principles,” Fraser said.

He also said that in ensuring that Guyanese businesses produce quality products and services, the CARICOM Regional Organisation Standards and Quality (CROSQ) has supported the GNBS in developing the quality infrastructure here.

With this programme, the GNBS ensures that all entities, whether large or small, are able to elevate their operational performance.

Cameron Baird, acting Director of Commerce at the Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce praised the GNBS for its aggressive system for laboratories and for this initiative.

“The 901 certification somewhat levels the playing field by affording small and micro entities certification to access tools, and innovative approaches for the utilization of standards.

“This could have a direct positive impact on international trade with major companies looking to form partnerships with certified and accredited companies,” Baird said.

She added that she anticipates more small and micro enterprises gravitating to this certification as they strive for higher quality standards in their operations.

What the certificate offers these enterprises are the tools to achieve training and knowledge of best practices. Many companies want to trade internationally but this is only possible if they meet the required International Standards of Operation (ISO).

To elevate a company to meet these standards, there are costly tests, assessments and audits that it must undergo. Hence, this programme will better position the companies to optimize their processes, ensure the work environment is safe and deliver superior quality products or services. Therefore becoming ready to compete with international counterparts.

“Standards are designed to protect us and these standards are consistent with international expectations.

“They (GNBS) help businesses maintain and improve the quality of products and services, in turn, builds trust among customers which is vital for long-term success. With interest in healthcare, manufacturing and food production, adhering to these standards ensures the safety of employees, customers and the public and minimise incidents of industrial accidents,” Baird said.

Similar to other quality accreditations, ISO 901 will give businesses the opportunity to get audits and feedback to improve in areas that need it and enhance the credibility of the business to gain the customers’ trust.
