Corentyne shooting: Fiancé granted $500k bail for attempted murder

Neil Madramootoo, a 29-year-old engineer, appeared at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court on Monday charged with the attempted murder of his fiancée, Ashmin Mahadeo.
Madramootooo of Shoe Lane, New Amsterdam, Berbice appeared before Magistrate Peter Hugh via Zoom.
It is alleged that on October 1, 2023, with intent to commit murder, he unlawfully and maliciously wounded Mahadeo. Madramootooo was represented by attorney-at-law Tejenarine Ramroop.
Police prosecutor Vadesh Jattan objected to bail based on the fact that the victim is still in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Georgetown Public Hospital. He stated that the 32-year-old woman remains in a critical condition.
But the defence attorney said that based on his knowledge, Mahadeo is in stable condition and that it was the accused who took her to the hospital.
The Prosecutor disclosed that the victim, in a video statement to the Police from her hospital bed on Friday last, identified Madramootoo as the shooter.
Magistrate Hugh, nonetheless, granted the accused $500,000 bail; he was also ordered to lodge his passport and report to the Central Police Station every Friday.
He is set to return to court on November 8, 2023.
Madramootoo is accused of shooting Mahadeo of Williamsburg, Corentyne, Berbice in the neck outside her home.
He was initially arrested and released on $300,000 station bail after the 72-hour period had elapsed for him to remain in Police custody; he was re-arrested this week based on the victim’s statement.
At the time of the shooting, the couple was packing items in Madramootoo’s company vehicle to be taken to a location in Port Mourant where their bridal shower/reception was expected to take place.
The fiancé had claimed that someone shot Mahadeo and escaped and that he found her at the gate in a pool of blood.
