A young woman was arrested after she was found with 9.7 grams of marijuana while at the Lusignan Prison on Wednesday.
She has been identified as Tiffany Grant of Prince Williams Street, Plaisance, East Coast Demerara. The drugs were retrieved after a search was conducted by the prison authorities, the Guyana Prison Service said in a press release.
The item was found in a black plastic bag wrapped with transparent plastic in her handbag.
The attempt at smuggling prompted the Director of Prisons, Nicklon Elliot to emphasise that the Prison Authority has seen an increase in civilians trying to smuggle prohibited items into the prison.
The Director said smuggling contraband into a correctional facility is an offence that has serious consequences.
He called on civilians to recognise the dangers at which they place themselves, society, inmates, and officers by engaging in the trade of contraband within the walls of the prison.
Forgive the woman- she cannot read and RIGHT.
