Man gets 4 years, $61 million fine over drugs in barrel at Norton Street

A 47-year-old man has been sentenced to three years in jail and fined $61 million for the 2021 cannabis bust at his Norton Street, Georgetown home.

Mervin Glen was on trial before City Magistrate Rondel Weever for the charge which alleged that on September 2, 2021, he had 68.8 kilograms of cannabis in his possession for the purpose of trafficking.

He was on trial with his girlfriend, Nicola Williams, who was also charged with the crime. However, Glen had opted to plead guilty to the crime while his trial was winding down.

Magistrate Weever, after taking into consideration the seriousness and prevalence of the charge, sentenced Glen to serve three years imprisonment.

He was also ordered to pay a fine of 61, 927,200. The trial is still ongoing for Williams.

According to reports, on the day in question, ranks of the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) acted on information and conducted a search at the house when they found the drugs concealed inside three barrels that were in the couple’s bedroom.
