Young farmer admits to killing Timehri teen

A 25-year-old Cabbage farmer on Monday confessed to fatally stabbing a Timehri, East Bank Demerara youth and wounding his father during a dispute in 2019.

Rickland Bovell, formally of Swan Village, East Bank Demerara, was arraigned before Justice Jo-Ann Barlow at the Demerara High Court for the capital offence of murder.

However, Bovell opted to plead guilty to the lesser count of manslaughter.

The charge read that on April 19, 2019, at the Timehri Docks, he unlawfully killed David Toney, 18.

He also pleaded guilty to a second indictment which read that he wounded David’s father, Mark Toney during the melee.

Sentencing was deferred until January 08, 2024.

According to reports, on the day in question, at about 04:00hrs, Bovell was engaged in a heated argument with David and his parents over the payment of cabbage.

It was during this argument that Bovell whipped out a knife and stabbed David. He also stabbed the victim’s father.

David was then picked up by public-spirited persons and rushed to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
