Two drivers on Monday appeared before Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Diamond Magistrate’s Court, charged with causing death by dangerous driving, driving without a license and breach of insurance.
Jonathan Bailey, a 27-year-old driver from Kuru Kururu, Soesdyke-Linden Highway pleaded not guilty and was granted $1.6 million bail; Steffy Timmerman, a 27-year-old female of Kuru Kururu, was charged with driving without a licensed and breach of insurance.
She pleaded guilty and was fined $75,000.
The matter was adjourned for court on December 28, 2023, at 13:00 hrs.
The two drivers were involved in an accident on December 2 at Hill Foot, Soesdyke/Linden Highway, which resulted in the death of pedestrian Vishnudat Ramlan, a 52-year-old resident of Kuru Kururu.
Police said Timmerman was proceeding along the northern side of the highway when she observed a male in the centre of the northern drive lane and on seeing that, she pulled to the north.
Notwithstanding, her right side wing mirror collided with the pedestrian, after which Bailey, who was proceeding in the same direction at a fast rate, overtook Timmerman and collided with Ramlan.
As a result of the collision, Ramlan received injuries to his head and on his body.
