4 years jail, $49.6 million fine for Sister’s Village man busted with ganja

Days after he was arrested, 39-year-old Latchman Sankar was on Thursday sentenced to four years imprisonment and fined $49.6 million after he admitted to having more than 55 kilograms of cannabis in his possession.

Sankar also known as ‘Jack’ appeared at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Zamilla Ally-Seepaul.

Sankar and Sanya Ramrattan a.k.a Shena, 36, of Sisters Village, West Bank Demerara, were arrested on Monday following the discovery of the narcotics at Block 1 Unity, Hubu Parika, East Bank Essequibo.

The discovery was made by ranks of the Customs Anti Narcotic Unit (CANU) who were conducting an operation.

The cannabis was found in several large bags containing several brick-like parcels.

They were both escorted to CANU’s Headquarters along with the narcotic which tested positive for cannabis, amounting to 102 parcels with a total street value of approximately $20 million. Ramrattan was released without being charged.
