A new hospital being constructed at New Amsterdam, Region Six (East Berbice- Corentyne) will also be a training hospital run in partnership with the University of the West Indies (UWI).
“We have just concluded the arrangement where the UWI School of Medicine will be our education partner here in Berbice, training doctors here in Berbice,” the Head of State announced on Friday.
On Sunday, the President announced that UWI officials were engaging the Government of Guyana to establish a School of Medicine in Region Six.
He added that the campus will have the capacity to bring students from neighbouring Suriname here to pursue their studies, and that efforts are being made to ensure that the rates will be the same as that offered to students of Trinidad and Tobago.
As he addressed Friday’s commissioning ceremony of the new Guyana Technical Training College Inc at Port Mourant, Region Six, the President announced the deal had been concluded and that another one is in the works.
The other deal will have the UWI’s School of Nursing accredit the new nursing school being built in Region Six.
Beyond these two ventures, the President reminded the gathering that the Institute of Hospitality is also being built in the region.
Altogether, these facilities are expected to help the government upskill more citizens and prepare them for job opportunities in Guyana’s evolving economy.
