Infrastructural works are progressing on the Enmore/Foulis Industrial and Commercial zone on the East Coast of Demerara with two of the six lots more than 90 percent completed.
The works include land clearing, the construction of approximately 18.91 kilometers of first-phase access roads and reinforced concrete composite bridges.
The development of the community aligns with a commitment made by President Dr Irfaan Ali during a visit to Enmore last year.
In a press release issued on Thursday, the Central Housing & Planning Authority (CH&PA) said the economic activities will generate thousands of employment opportunities, to benefit residents of Enmore/Foulis and other East Coast of Demerara communities.
Minister of Housing and Water Collin Croal headed a technical team from CH&PA Projects Department and Surveys Unity to inspect ongoing works.
Of the six lots, Croal noted that two lots are more than 90% completed; the overall project is about 60% complete.
“In the first phase, we are currently developing over 660 acres of land on this site now and we’re spending about over $4.58 billion in the first-phase infrastructure,” Croal was quoted as saying in the press release.
The industrial and commercial hub is set to feature three main access roads to accommodate large trucks.
The works, Croal said have significantly transformed the area, which was once dominated by sugar canes.
“Minister Croal outlined the zoning plan for the area, specifying sections dedicated to heavy industrial, light industrial, and commercial activities,” the release noted.
In the Enmore residential housing scheme, located north of the commercial area, the release said Minister Croal noted that several allottees have gained access to their land for home construction, paralleling the progress of infrastructure works.
Ahead to the 2024 housing programme, Croal anticipates that contracts will be awarded soon for the development of numerous housing schemes.
