Prison escapee attacked cops with cutlass moments before fatal shooting – Police

The Guyana Police Force on Sunday said prison escapee and double-murder suspect Akeem Wong was found by a team of joint services members whom he tried to attack with a cutlass moments before he was fatally shot.

According to the statement by the police, the incident occurred at around 13:40 hrs at ‘Groete Creek’ Backdam, Essequibo River in Region Seven.

The man who escaped from the Mazaruni Prison on February 15, and was on the run ever since, was spotted by a team of Joint Services members.

Police said Wong who was hiding in some bushes charged towards the team while wielding a cutlass.

“He was fired upon and fatally wounded. He fell to the ground and was relieved of his weapon,” the statement said.

The police said $14,700, three sim cards, a flash drive and memory card, a scissors, four cigarettes, a flashlight with batteries, a fishing hook, CAN$100, a cellphone and a lighter were found on and nearby the escapee.

Last week, Police Sergeant Alex Vaughn, who was part of the search party, lost his life after he was accidentally shot by one of his colleagues, a Police Constable.

Wong is the main suspect in the brutal murders of David Gomes and his 75-year-old mother Elizabeth Gomes.

He escaped from the Mazaruni Prison in Region Seven, on February 14. He was serving a 15-year-sentence for rape.

David and his mother were brutally chopped to death between 17:00 hrs and 20:00 hrs on March 08.

At the time, the mother and son were visiting their vacation home in Saxacalli home.

They were accompanied by David’s six-year-old son who witnessed the heinous crime.
