Four persons, on Monday, allegedly broke into Dalip Trading Enterprise at Lombard Street, Georgetown, and carted off with $7 million in cash and an undisclosed amount of cheques.
The incident occurred between 4:00 hrs and 5:30 hrs and according to the security guard who was on duty at the time, the thieves were seen exiting the building with a safe.
The security guard relayed this information to the police and said he was unarmed and could not pursue the persons.
Dalip Trading is a four-storey concrete building with several offices and is secured by internal locks and reinforced by iron grills, Mohaswardatt Dalip, 61, the proprietor told detectives. The business place sold hardware supplies and had a four-inch metal safe secured in the cashier’s office.
Dalip said he secured the building on Saturday and went home. Then on Monday, he was contacted by the 60-year-old security guard, who said he was awoken by sounds coming from inside the building and upon checking, he saw the thieves making their escape.
There are several CCTV cameras affixed to the building internally and externally, which the police will be using to obtain information as the investigation continues.
The scene was processed and photographed by ranks of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Headquarters. It was observed that the door to the cashier’s office was pried open and ransacked.
There were no signs of forced entry to the building. Several persons in the area were questioned, but no further information was obtained. Checks are also being made for the suspects.
Who has Keys to the building ?
Must be an inside job….since no forced entry.
