A Friendship, East Bank Demerara man was arrested on Monday while attempting to smuggle a phone concealed in a powder container into the Timehri Prison.

Adrian Braithwaite visited the prison around 13:50h on Monday to drop off personal items for a female prisoner Shelisa Ellis.

The Guyana Prison Service, in a statement, noted that during a routine check at the self-support area, prison staff discovered the phone hidden inside the powder container.

Braithwaite, who is cooperating with investigators, is likely to be arraigned in court on Tuesday.

This incident highlights the commitment and alertness of the prison staff on duty, the statement noted.

Director of Prisons, Nicklon Elliot, recently warned that members of the public and prison officers found colluding to smuggle contraband into prison facilities will face the full consequences of the law.

Elliot noted that despite increased monitoring and surveillance at all prison locations, several attempts have been made by the public to smuggle contraband into these facilities.

He emphasized that there will be no leniency for corrupt officers, family members, and friends of inmates who attempt to break the law.
