Massy Gas Products Guyana Ltd. (MGPGL) has issued a statement clarifying reports about an alleged explosion involving a cooking gas cylinder in Better Hope Village at the weekend. The company responded swiftly to the incident and provided important details regarding the situation.
MGPGL confirmed that it was notified of the incident at 10:00 AM on Friday, November 29. A response team arrived at the affected household by 2:35 PM that same day. Upon arrival, the team conducted interviews and investigations to better understand the circumstances.
According to the information gathered, the customer was using her stove when the gas in her cylinder ran out. She replaced it with a new cylinder from MGPGL. Shortly thereafter, a fire was observed near the cylinder. However, the fire was quickly extinguished using a fire extinguisher and water. MGPGL clarified that there was no explosion and that no injuries or property damage occurred as a result of the incident.
Upon further inspection, it was found that the cylinder was stored under the kitchen sink, with the hose clip made of plastic. The clip was found to be loose around the hose, and both the regulator and hose were burned. The MGPGL response team performed a thorough inspection, including soap testing the valve pin, valve, rubber, and neck of the cylinder, and found no signs of leaks.
As part of their response, MGPGL provided the customer with a new cylinder and replaced the fittings with recommended products from their approved manufacturer. They also demonstrated the correct procedure for attaching the regulator. The customer confirmed that everything was functioning properly after the adjustments.
MGPGL is urging all domestic cooking gas users to remain vigilant when using cooking gas and to carefully follow safety guidelines provided by their gas suppliers. With the holiday season approaching, when home cooking and baking typically increase, MGPGL is reminding consumers to always use recommended products and conduct leak tests when making regulator connections.
The company recommends the use of the Kosan-branded LPG jumbo regulator and the Codan 2601 gas hose, both of which are approved for safe use. MGPGL also announced plans for an upcoming Gas Awareness and Safety Campaign, which will provide more information on safe practices for cooking gas use.
