On Wednesday, Roger Erwin Pierre, also known as ‘Pants’, a labourer from Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara, went on a violent rampage, leaving two people dead and several others injured.
Pierre, who is reportedly mentally ill, attacked 63-year-old Laldat Tooknauth around 9:30 hrs in Huntley, Mahaicony.
Tooknauth was stabbed and urgently transported to Mahaicony Hospital, where he was later transferred to Georgetown Public Hospital in critical condition.
Around an hour after the attack, at approximately 10:30 hrs, the Mahaicony Police Station received reports of a man wielding a knife at Novar School Dam, causing alarm.
A police team responded quickly and located Pierre on the Dundee Public Road, where he was still brandishing the weapon.
Attempts to disarm Pierre were unsuccessful, and he resisted arrest. During the confrontation, Pierre was shot in his left foot but continued to disregard police commands to drop the knife.
Pierre’s violent behaviour escalated as he moved toward Airy Hall, throwing glass bottles at both officers and residents. At one point, he concealed the knife in his waistband, only to retrieve a steel rod from a nearby construction site. Using the rod, he attacked 69-year-old Lambert Nunes, injuring him in the left hand.
As Pierre continued down a cross street, he was pursued by both police and local residents.
Frederick Williams, a 68-year-old mason from Airy Hall, assisted in trying to restrain Pierre. In the ensuing struggle, Pierre managed to grab the knife again and stabbed Williams repeatedly in the head and other areas. Police were forced to open fire on Pierre, immobilizing him.
Both Pierre and Williams were transported to Mahaicony Hospital, where Williams died from his injuries, and Pierre was pronounced dead.
Both bodies bore gunshot wounds and are currently at the Bailey’s Funeral Parlour.
