Suresh Singh, the Director of Youth in the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, was officially sworn in as a Member of Parliament (MP) on Friday during a session of the National Assembly.

Singh, a candidate from the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) national top-up list, fills the seat vacated by government MP Dharamkumar Seeraj, who was appointed as Guyana’s High Commissioner to India.

The vacancy arose following Seeraj’s resignation, prompting the need for a replacement from the top-up list. On January 17, the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) officially confirmed Singh as the new MP.

Before taking his seat in the National Assembly, Singh had to take and subscribe to the Oath of Office.

In his statement, Singh declared, “I do hereby solemnly declare that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the people of Guyana.”

Present in the House were Singh’s wife and mother.

A former student of Annandale Secondary School, Singh later pursued a career in teaching, earning qualifications in mathematics and education from Cyril Potter College of Education and the University of Guyana.

He further advanced his studies with a Master of Science in Education from Walden University. Singh taught at Hope Secondary School before embarking on a successful career in the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, where he steadily progressed from Assistant Director to Director of Youth.

A committed volunteer within the People’s Progressive Party, Singh served for many years in the party’s youth arm, the Progressive Youth Organisation (PYO), eventually rising to the position of Chairman. In addition to his political and professional roles, Singh is also a pandit and the Priest in Charge at the Better Hope Mandir.

Speaker of the National Assembly, Manzoor Nadir, took the opportunity to express his gratitude to Seeraj for his contributions and warmly welcomed Singh to Parliament.

As Singh embarks on this new chapter in his career, his wealth of experience in education, youth development, and public service is expected to enrich the work of the National Assembly.
