Guyanese are being called upon to proudly display the national flag—the Golden Arrowhead—on their homes, at events, and in public spaces as part of Flag Days, a national movement that underscores patriotism and the protection of Guyana’s sovereignty, says Minister of Labour, Joseph Hamilton.

The Ministry of Labour held a brief ceremony on Friday to commemorate the start of Flag Days, which run from 24 to 26 May, culminating on Independence Day.

Described as a patriotic initiative, Flag Days encourages citizens across the country to visually express their national pride by flying the flag high in celebration of Guyana’s achievements and its continued transformation.

Addressing ministry staff, Hamilton highlighted the significance of national unity and pride during this period, pointing to improvements in infrastructure, housing, and economic opportunity as reasons for renewed patriotism.

“Flag Day is important to protecting and securing our sovereignty, and ensuring that we commit ourselves to the development of this country,” Hamilton said. “Everything that happens in this country matters to all of us. Every opportunity Guyana presents should be seized, and we must ensure we participate fully.”

He noted that perceptions of Guyana are changing, especially among the diaspora, due to expanded investment opportunities and greater access to education, housing, and public services.

“We must be proud to be Guyanese, and we must continue to present Guyana in the most positive light—both at home and abroad,” he urged.

A Flag Day Concert will be held on 24 May in Anna Regina, bringing together celebrated local artistes for an unforgettable evening of music, culture, and patriotism.
