Ranks of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) attached to the Ruimveldt Police Station have arrested a 17-year-old male following the recovery of a firearm and several rounds of ammunition during a police operation on Tuesday evening.

Around 19:05hrs, a mobile patrol acting on intelligence pursued two male suspects observed riding a red motorcycle near Durban Street. During the chase, the suspects lost control of the motorcycle while crossing the bridge at Sussex and Hill Streets, Albouystown, causing both men to fall onto the roadway.

The pillion rider fled on foot but was quickly apprehended by police on Howes Street, Albouystown, after a brief pursuit. The driver, meanwhile, managed to pick up the motorcycle and escape south along Hill Street.

A search of the apprehended suspect revealed a 9mm pistol with a magazine containing five live rounds. The teenager was cautioned and taken into custody along with the recovered firearm and ammunition, which have been lodged at the station.

Efforts are ongoing to locate the second suspect, and investigations continue.
