A 27-year-old Venezuelan National of Annandale, Essequibo Coast, was killed on Sunday after a Motor Lorry in which he was travelling toppled into a rice field along the Queenstown access road.

According to a statement from the Guyana Police Force (GPF), the motor lorry GAJ 7403 was driven by a 34-year-old male driver of Hoff-Van-Aurich, Essequibo Coast.

Police said at around 10:46h, the motor vehicle was proceeding across a wooden bridge when the driver allegedly lost control, causing the lorry to topple into a rice field on the southern side of the road before turning turtle.

The 27-year-old, Isaias Rojas, along with another Venezuelan national, also of Annandale, Essequibo Coast, were in the tray of the lorry.

Rojas was pinned under the lorry after it toppled.

He was extracted and taken in an unconscious state to the Suddie Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival by a doctor on duty. The body is presently at the Suddie Public Hospital Mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination.

The driver was arrested and taken into custody, where he conducted a breathalyser test, which found that his alcohol level was below the legal limit.

He remains in custody, assisting with ongoing investigations.
