Shawn Sargeant, a 28-year-old labourer of Diamond, East Bank Demerara, was charged for causing the death of 33-year-old Jason Bhojedat in a tragic Sunday night accident.

The labourer appeared before Magistrate Dylon Bess at the Diamond Magistrate’s Court. He was not required to plead to the charge and was granted $700,000 bail.

Based on a Police report, Sargeant drove motorcar PKK 6633 on Sunday night on the Diamond New Interlink Road. He attempted to overtake Bhojedat, who was driving a minibus, but crashed into that vehicle.

As a result of the accident, the bus collided with an electricity pole and then flipped several times. Bhojedat was flung from the vehicle, losing his life at the scene of the accident.

Police said they were unable to conduct a breathalyser test on Sargeant to determine whether he was intoxicated, as he sustained some minor injuries and had stitches on his mouth.

Bhojedat joined Demerara Distillers Limited on January 10, 2014, as a Trainee Chemist. His commitment to excellence and continuous growth saw him advance to Production/Quality Control Chemist, then to Warehouse Manager, and ultimately to the role of Distillery Plant Manager, a position he held with distinction until his passing.
