Four dead after chemical exposure aboard cargo barge at city wharf
Four men have died following suspected chemical exposure aboard a cargo barge docked at a wharf on Water Street, Georgetown.
The identities of the deceased are yet to be confirmed. They are reported to include the vessel’s captain and two dock workers.
News Room understands that the incident occurred when the men entered the engine room at the bottom of the barge to investigate a suspected leak. While inside, they were reportedly exposed to chemicals and collapsed.
An alarm was raised shortly thereafter, and the men were removed from the engine room and rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) in an unconscious state.
Police ranks remain at the scene as investigations continue.
