A local law school has been sought after for years and on Friday, Attorney General Anil Nandlall told Parliamentarians that construction of this school will commence this year through funds allocated in Budget 2026.

“In 2026, we will begin the construction of a law school in Guyana.

“It will attract students from across the Caribbean, and it will provide cheap legal education to Guyanese,” Nandlall told the National Assembly.

The first capital injection for this project, he said, is part of the $1.558 trillion budget. Last year, the site was clear, and designs were reportedly under review.

The establishment of the law school has long been viewed as a critical step in Guyana’s legal education system, allowing students to complete their professional training at home rather than abroad. Others from across the region are expected to come to Turkeyen, where the school will be constructed, to get their legal education.

Approval for this school was granted by the Council of Legal Education. Once operational, the law school will be managed by that body, which governs all recognised law schools across the Caribbean region.
