Cop stabbed, suspect shot during altercation in Mahdia
A police corporal sustained stab wounds after he was allegedly attacked by two men who attempted to disarm him while police were responding to a violent street altercation in Mahdia, Region Eight.
Police Headquarters reported that the incident occurred at about 01:45hrs on Friday at 111 Miles, Mahdia.
Preliminary investigations revealed that ranks from the Mahdia Police Station responded to reports of a disturbance along Mahdia Primary School Street. Upon arrival, the police observed several males engaged in a violent altercation.
The individuals were instructed to desist but reportedly ignored the commands and began hurling objects at the police and the police vehicle.
During efforts to restore order, the police corporal was attacked by two men.
One of the attackers was reportedly armed with a sharp instrument. During the struggle, the corporal sustained stab wounds to his lower abdomen and right arm. In the course of the altercation, the rank discharged his service weapon, injuring the one of the suspects.
The injured suspect, a 22-year-old pork-knocker of Campbelltown Village, along with the police corporal were escorted to the Mahdia District Hospital.
A pair of scissors and two 9mm spent shells were recovered at the scene and lodged as evidence. The injured suspect remains under police guard. No other arrests have been made.
Investigations are continuing.
