Garfield Sobers U-19 Cricket: Top Level Academy beat Combermere by 76 runs


Top Level Cricket Academy of Guyana bounced back from their opening-round defeat in the Sir Garfield Sobers International Under-19 Cricket Tournament with a commanding 76-run victory over Combermere School of Barbados in their second-round encounter on Tuesday.
After suffering a 15-run loss to Presentation College of Trinidad and Tobago in their tournament opener the previous day, the Guyanese side responded in emphatic fashion to put their campaign back on track.
Batting first, Top Level Cricket Academy amassed an imposing 291 for six from their allotted 40 overs, built around an outstanding third-wicket partnership between opener Kishawn Silas and middle-order batter Amar Persaud.
Silas top-scored with a composed 74 from 83 deliveries, striking six fours and one six, while Persaud played an aggressive innings of 58 from 54 balls, decorated with four boundaries and two sixes. The pair shared a crucial 116-run partnership for the third wicket to lay the platform for the imposing total.
Captain Mickel Sharma continued his impressive form with another influential innings, following up his unbeaten 40 from 22 balls in the opening match with a brisk 43 from 30 deliveries, including three fours and a six.
Shane Prince provided late acceleration with an unbeaten 31 from 22 balls, while Shahid Ramzan added 17 and Richard Ramdeholl contributed 15.
For Combermere School, Khalik Forte returned figures of 3-41 and Enrico Browne claimed 2-45, but the Bajan bowlers were unable to contain Top Level’s batting line-up.
Chasing 292 for victory, Combermere School were dismissed for 215 in 36.1 overs, despite fighting half-centuries from Josh Reid and Vinode Dhanraj. Reid led the resistance with a counter-attacking 64 from 49 deliveries, which included two fours and four sixes, while Dhanraj struck 55 from 48 balls with six boundaries.
Top Level’s bowlers once again produced a disciplined performance, led by off-spinner Richard Ramdeholl, who followed up his four-wicket haul in the opening match with excellent figures of 3-29.
Leg-spinner Kaylan Callendar continued his fine tournament with 2-35, while captain Mickel Sharma capped an outstanding all-round display by claiming 2-34 to help seal the convincing victory.
Top Level Cricket Academy’s participation in the tournament has been made through support from the Guyana Police Force, Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, ENet, L&L Construction, CopyFix and E Timbers.
The squad features talented young players from the Guyana Police Force Academy, Tucber Park Cricket Club, Demerara Cricket Club, Georgetown Cricket Club, Rose Hall Cricket Club, Malteenoes Cricket Club and Everest Cricket Club, highlighting the depth of emerging cricket talent across Guyana.

Following this phase of the tournament, the winner of each of the four zones will advance to the semi-finals, while there will be playoff matches for fifth, seventh, ninth, 11th, 13th, 15th, 17th, 19th, 21st and 24th places.
